Watson and Stafford shine in defeat

DUNDAS—You can call it a missed opportunity for the Dundas Real McCoys, but there were some positives to the 7-4 loss to the Brantford Blast last Friday night in Allan Cup Hockey in the Brantford Civic Centre.

One of the positives was the return of Cam Watson to the lineup with his first two-goal performance of the season.  The other, was another strong offensive performance by Scott Stafford with a second period powerplay goal.  Dundas had the best powerplay on the night getting three goals on four opportunities.

Don Robertson, President and General Manager of the Dundas Real McCoys, however, felt his charges were not as mentally prepared as they should have been for the contest.

"Brantford seemed more prepared Friday night and we just didn't respond as well as we had hoped we would. We played without two former pros at centre (Shawn Snider and Dan Lapointe), and that really showed,” said Robertson.

“We don’t have the depth yet to compensate when players are not available, however, we expect to have everybody Friday night at home. This weekend will be a real test because we play both Stoney Creek and Whitby, and that will tell us how we stack up.”

Friday night (November 21) the McCoys play the Stoney Creek Generals at 7:30 p.m. in the JL Grightmire Arena, and then travel to Whitby on Saturday to play the Dunlops at 6:30 p.m. in the Iroquois Sports Centre

In addition to Watson and Stafford, Chris McGuffin added another goal while Simon Mangos assisted on two scoring plays.

DUNDAS—Dundas Real McCoys are off and skating with the hope of another appearance in the Allan Cup Hockey league playoffs.

Last Friday, they opened their 2014-15 season with a 5-2 victory over Norwood Vipers in in the JL Grightmire Arena, and followed it up with a 4-1 win over Stoney Creek Generals in the Gateway Arena.
In the home opener, the speed of the McCoys was on display throughout the match.  Norwood’s James Diminie opened the scoring at 12:02 of the first period, and then Dundas took over.  The McCoys scored once in the first period, twice in the second and added two more in the third.

"Last year, it seemed we just changed the lines and let the players go.  This year, there’s a lot more instruction needed, and the new guys are responding to it well so far,” said President and General Manager Don Robertson.

“There is a big learning curve, and there will be some bumps along the way, but so far so good.  It also hasn't hurt that (Mike) Mole is playing the way he did in the Allan Cup Tournament. He was brilliant on the weekend,” added. Robertson, who feels that if Mole can stop 50 shots a night, his club will always have a chance to win.

Curtis Campbell and Shawn Snider had a goal and two assists apiece in the home opener, with Keegan Rowe, Omar Ennaffatti, and Chris McGuffin adding singles.  Rowe and Ennaffatti each assisted on a goal.  In addition to Diminie, Joe Curry scored once for Norwood.

Last Sunday, in the McCoys first road game of the season, Snider picked up another two-point game with a goal and an assist.  Dan Lapointe and Scott Stafford also scored once and set up another goal each.  McGuffin had the other Dundas goal, while teammate, Mike Amodeo set up two goals.  Dundas scored in each period even though they were outshot 51-29 by Stoney Creek. Mike Ruberto had the lone goal for the Generals.

The next action for Dundas is Friday, November 14 when they travel to Brantford to take on the Blast at 7:30 p.m. in the Brantford Community Centre.  Dundas returns home to play Stoney Creek on Friday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. before travelling to Whitby to play the Dunlops the following night in the Iroquois Sports Centre at 6:30 p.m.
